In order to provide Learners for the Your Digital Pathway course the University processes the personal data of participants. Please read the privacy information below – Part 1 comprises Durham University’s Generic Privacy Notice. Part 2 comprises privacy information specific to the processing of the personal data of Leaners for the Santander IoC TechUP Digital Skills Course.
PART 1 – GENERIC PRIVACY NOTICE
Durham University’s responsibilities under data protection legislation include the duty to ensure that we provide individuals with information about how we process personal data. We do this in a number of ways, one of which is the publication of privacy notices. Our privacy notices comprise two parts – a generic part and a part tailored to the specific processing activity being undertaken.

The University keeps personal data for as long as it is needed for the purpose for which it was originally collected. Most of these time periods are set out in the University Records Retention Schedule.
Your rights in relation to your personal data
Privacy notices and/or consent
You have the right to be provided with information about how and why we process your personal data. Where you have the choice to determine how your personal data will be used, we will ask you for consent. Where you do not have a choice (for example, where we have a legal obligation to process the personal data), we will provide you with a privacy notice. A privacy notice is a verbal or written statement that explains how we use personal data.
Whenever you give your consent for the processing of your personal data, you receive the right to withdraw that consent at any time. Where withdrawal of consent will have an impact on the services we are able to provide, this will be explained to you, so that you can determine whether it is the right decision for you.
Accessing your personal data
You have the right to be told whether we are processing your personal data and, if so, to be given a copy of it. This is known as the right of subject access. You can find out more about this right on the University’s Subject Access Requests webpage.
Right to rectification
If you believe that personal data we hold about you is inaccurate, please contact us and we will investigate. You can also request that we complete any incomplete data.
Once we have determined what we are going to do, we will contact you to let you know.
Right to erasure
You can ask us to erase your personal data in any of the following circumstances:
- We no longer need the personal data for the purpose it was originally collected
- You withdraw your consent and there is no other legal basis for the processing
- You object to the processing and there are no overriding legitimate grounds for the processing
- The personal data have been unlawfully processed
- The personal data have to be erased for compliance with a legal obligation
- The personal data have been collected in relation to the offer of information society services (information society services are online services such as banking or social media sites).
Once we have determined whether we will erase the personal data, we will contact you to let you know.
Right to restriction of processing
You can ask us to restrict the processing of your personal data in the following circumstances:
- You believe that the data is inaccurate and you want us to restrict processing until we determine whether it is indeed inaccurate
- The processing is unlawful and you want us to restrict processing rather than erase it
- We no longer need the data for the purpose we originally collected it but you need it in order to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim and
- You have objected to the processing and you want us to restrict processing until we determine whether our legitimate interests in processing the data override your objection.
Once we have determined how we propose to restrict processing of the data, we will contact you to discuss and, where possible, agree this with you.
Making a complaint
If you are unsatisfied with the way in which we process your personal data, we ask that you let us know so that we can try and put things right. PART 2 – PRIVACY NOTICE FOR Participants for the Your Digital Pathway course
The Your Digital Pathway course is funded by the Santander Universities in partnership with The Institute of Coding (IoC), TechUPOnline is part of that work, and we require information about the people enrolling to administer and evaluate the online courses.
TechUPOnline, based at Durham University, is running the Your Digital Pathway course in collaboration with Santander Universities and the Institute of Coding, the data shared with us will only be used to ensure the successful running and monitoring of the activities of the Your Digital Skills course.
Type(s) of personal data collected and held by the University and method of collection
The following types of Personal Data will be collected when you enroll as a student or subscriber (“learner”) TechUPOnline courses:
- Telephone number
- Email address
- Date of Birth
- University, if applicable
- type and identification number of the country of residence or passport
- Education History
- Employment Status
In addition “Special Categories” of Personal Data will be collected including:
- Genetic or biometric data used to uniquely identify a natural person
- We will also be collecting data on your progress on the Your Digital Pathway course.
We collect personal information only where we need to and law permits. In order for our use of your personal data to be lawful, we need to meet conditions in the data protection legislation. For the purpose of this programme, the relevant condition(s) that we are meeting are:
- Article 6 (1)(e): It is necessary to collect data from users in order to effectively access the service and to evaluate outcomes of the service. The legal basis is public task and the legal gateway is Section 87 of the Education and Skills Act 2008.
- Article 6 (1)(f): It is necessary to collect data from users as the processing is necessary for the organisation’s legitimate interests or the legitimate interests of a third party unless there is a good reason to protect the individual’s individual data that overrides those legitimate
How personal data is stored
TechUPOnline is hosted by Thinkific Labs Inc. (“Thinkific”). They provide us with the online course creation platform that allows us to offer our courses to you.
Your data is stored through Thinkific’s data storage, databases and the general Thinkific application. They store your data on a secure server behind a firewall.
If you make a purchase on our site, we use a third party payment processor such as Stripe or Paypal. Payments are encrypted through the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). Your purchase transaction data is stored only as long as is necessary to complete your purchase transaction.
All direct payment gateways adhere to the standards set by PCI-DSS as managed by the PCI Security Standards Council, which is a joint effort of brands like Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.
PCI-DSS requirements help ensure the secure handling of credit card information by our site and related courses and its service providers.

Your data will be stored in a proprietary database on server that is both secure and backed up regularly according to Durham University policies. Access to the data is restricted to those persons who are directly involved in the administration of the Programme.
How personal data is processed
Personal Data is collected for the purposes of running the Course and ensuring that we meet your expectations of the Course. Data may also be used to evaluate your application and monitor your progress within the Course. Our purpose for the evaluation is to ensure that you get the best out of the Course and for research purposes only. Anonymised Data will also be used to track our performance against our targets for the Course.
Who the University shares personal data with
As Durham University is a member of the IoC, an element of your data will be shared with them.
This data, collected by Santander Universities as part of this project will also be passed to The IoC/University of Bath to allow them to conduct further research and evaluation of the activities funded as part of the IoC project.
Durham University will receive and store the data outlined in this Privacy Notice, the IoC’s Privacy Notice and Santander’s Privacy Notice throughout your application to, and participation in the Your Digital Pathway course.
TechUPOnline, the IoC and Santander Universities are all covered by a separate data sharing agreement that will ensure their compliance with the terms of this Policy.
How long personal data is held by the University
Your Personal data will be held for a period of 18 months from the date of initial registration. This period may be extended, with your permission, where you continue to be involved with TechUPOnline.
Visitors to our websites/webpages
When someone visits www.dur.ac.uk or techupwomen.org we use a third party service, Google Analytics, to collect standard internet log information and details of visitor behaviour patterns. We do this to find out things such as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site. This information is only processed in a way which does not identify anyone. We do not make, and do not allow Google to make, any attempt to find out the identities of those visiting our website. If we do want to collect personally identifiable information through our website, we will be transparent about this. We will make it clear when we collect personal information and will explain what we intend to do with it.
A cookie is a simple text file that is stored on your computer or mobile device by a website’s server and only that server will be able to retrieve or read the contents of that cookie. Cookies allow websites to remember user preferences, choices and selections, such as what’s in your shopping basket. Durham University also make use of the Google Analytics service to understand how you navigate around our site.
